first, pardon my incompetence on not knowing how to get this reply into 
the thread correctly.
I did some experimenting this weekend - I still have not resolved the 
issue with the authenticated earthlink server.  I have tried every 
combination of authentication using CRAM-MD5, Plain, and login with or 
without TLS and I still cannot get a reply back from the server.  Even 
entering the wrong password, I get a blank reply...I was at least hoping 
for the satisfaction of seeing a authentication denied error.
So I really have no idea - its probably something earthlink...I can 
connect fine using Thunderbird from my windows PC.  I checked the 
Thunderbird setup and I have the "NO" option selected for "use secure 
connection" - in fact when I try to select either TLS or SSL, I cannot 
send mail using thunderbird.
So although the server reports back that it is OK with TLS, I don't 
think it is...so I almost have to assume Thunderbird is using CRAM-MD5 
encryption to communicate, but I dont know for sure....
